Sacred Garden

An Art film & original contemporaty music

by Kyoka Tsukamoto

Consisted of 15 pieces of contemporary music, each piece introduces its particular “Sacred Garden,” creating a meditative soundscape, guiding us into the beauty of nature through a unique point of view. Each garden inspires an elusive protagonist, be it an insect, the spirit of a tree, a ghost or the soul of an ancient Queen.

We walk through the gardens following the protagonists such as bees, collecting nectar for honey without knowing that its true purpose is pollination. We watch them travelling among the collection of the most wonderful blossoms around the world. They guide us into the mysteries of nature, while posing us an internal question on our own existence in the world. Are we also going after the fragrance of flowers and hunting for honey, without knowing our raison d’être?

Inspired by the ancient sacred songs from the Japanese creation myth Kojiki, I have composed a series of contemporary classical music. The film is a visual interpretation of the music that I conceived at the garden; it conveys the flow of consciousness which observes the mysterious life cycle that we are part of.

It offers an artistic experience that connects us to the Divine, a meditative space where the participants are spiritually aligned to the wonderfulness of the sacred nature. The music I wrote in gardens will re-establish a healthier connection between our spirit, mind, heart, soul and body. The contemporary classical music and poetic imagery will surround us to make us feel like we are one with the small animals in the garden.

Seven years after a feature-length essay film, Kyoka Tsukamoto brings a new creation, a multimedia installation project supported by the Canada Council for the Arts; a 80 min. art film with 15 pieces of contemporary music that she accumulated over the years with the scenes she shot over many months in 2024-2025.

An initial cine-concert event at le Gesù with invited musicians at the festival Nuit blanche à Montréal attracted more than 3400 visitors. The characteristics of the church, a large echo and reverb inherently “immersive”, was the point of departure for the new creation; 3D sound design using Dolby Atmos technology will make a modern meditative space at a gallery, a museum and theaters.
